On October 26th 2022, our fifth grade Bell students had the opportunity to travel to Cherokee, NC for a fascinating field trip tied closely with curricular goals in our Wit and Wisdom unit, Cultures in Conflict. Students got to explore two famous historic attractions: The Oconaluftee Indian Village and The Museum of the Cherokee Indians. This trip deepened our understanding of the history and culture of the Native American tribes and was a great way to make this history come alive.
Students began at the museum where they learned about the history and cultural heritage of the Cherokee Indians. After a lunch along the scenic Oconaluftee River, we enjoyed a guided tour of the Village which included the Craft Line such as finger weaving, basketry, pottery, weaponry, and more. Our tour guide explained how the crafts were made and the purpose of each craft. Then we went to the Living History Section where we saw replicas of Cherokee homes and community structures. There were re-enactors dressed in the traditional clothing of that time period and the students got to ask questions and interact. It was a gorgeous day to be in Cherokee and was very valuable learning experience! Please visit our Facebook page for even more pictures!
