Welcome to BCS Library Media Services

The School Library Media programs in Buncombe County Schools (BCS) are an integral part of instructional programming. The media program and its resources are constantly evolving, creating globally competitive opportunities for all students.

SHVES Media Center

Purpose

To promote a collaborative learning community, both inside and outside the library walls, that engages students to read, explore, analyze, reflect, synthesize and create new ideas and information to adapt and contribute to a global society.

NBHS Media Center

Direction

Our students will become proficient readers, fluid in digital and information literacy, communication, critical thinking and creativity, to prepare them to be the innovative leaders of their future.

ACRMS Media Center

Core Beliefs

Our school library media programs are vital to empower our students, teachers and communities to support authentic teaching, develop strong readers and achieve academic excellence.

Libraries must transform into flexible, innovative learning environments that foster exploration, creativity, innovation and personalized learning for all.

ACRMS Media Center

We must invest purposefully in our library media centers to develop and maintain collections that are current, reflect diversity in the community and world and offer equitable access to resources for patrons to read, seek information, collaborate and communicate freely as guaranteed by the first Amendment.

Always encouraging the personal growth of the whole child through the development of digital and information literacy skills to research, read, reflect, analyze and synthesize information resources effectively and ethically is vital in a global information society.

Through the media center, BCS provides access to high quality authentic digital and print resources that are aligned with ISTE and North Carolina State Standards.  These resources are used throughout schools to effectively integrate information and technology standards, promote student literacy, and facilitate collaborative learning environments. Media Coordinators and classroom teachers collaborate to create an innovative environment in which student learning is the focus.

BCS media centers provide open, point of need access for students and teachers around the clock via Destiny Library Manager and other online resources.  Students have opportunities to create a wide variety of products and explore topics of interest within a flexible, literacy-based, inquiry-focused environment.

Question: What can a student do with a student ID account?
Answer: Student ID accounts allow students to borrow e-resources and access library databases just like any other Buncombe County Public Library card. Students can also borrow up to 10 print or audio books from the Buncombe County Public Library collection.

Question: Is the student account free?
Answer: Yes, the student account is free. There are no overdue fines for student accounts, but students are responsible for any fees on lost or damaged books.

Question: How do I sign my child up for a student ID account?
Answer: Buncombe County Schools students from pre-kindergarten to grade 12 will NOT automatically be enrolled in this program. Parents must fill out the opt in form that is provided in the fall of the school year.

Question: What if I don’t want my child to have a student ID account?
Answer: Parents may bypass the program for their student(s) by simply choosing not to fill out the form. Be aware that students who do not opt in will not be able to participate in classroom use of public library resources unless they have a Buncombe County Public Library card and know the full card number and PIN.
