The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is the nation's highest honor for teachers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Buncombe County Schools is celebrating not just one, but two 2025 finalists from the school system.
Karen McPherson, a math teacher at Owen High, and Erin Maccarelli, a science teacher at Valley Springs Middle School, were selected to represent the state in the competition. Both completed extensive portfolios demonstrating their passion, innovation, dedication, and leadership in their schools.
BCS is proud of these educators for earning this prestigious honor, and for being outstanding ambassadors for the school system and public education in North Carolina.
