During the month of December, people from across the globe celebrate various holidays. Students at Charles C. Bell Elementary are expanding their knowledge of Hanukkah with a special presentation and performance.

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that is celebrated for eight days and nights. This year, Hanukkah began on the evening of November 28. Each night a candle is lit on the menorah symbolizing the Maccabees’ victory over King Antiochus, who banned Jews from freely practicing their religion.*

Ms. Penny White with Asheville Jewish Community Center, brought some Hanukkah traditions alive by singing songs, teaching the children new words, and playing games with them. She presented her lesson to Bell Elementary students in Headstart through second grade. “I do believe the staff and the students learned more about Hanukkah and enjoyed doing so,” said Ms. White. “As I was leaving the gym after my presentation, one of the first graders said to me, ‘Thank you for teaching us your songs. It was fun. I didn’t really know about Hanukkah, and now I know I like Hanukkah - a lot!’”

Every student in attendance received a bag with a dreidel to take home. Each bag came with a set of instructions for playing the game. Principal Danny Fusco hopes that this presentation helped students gain a more global understanding of the various holiday celebrations this time of year. Sharing this experience is something that Mr. Fusco feels is essential.

“As a Leader in my school it is important to teach to seek first to understand, then be understood,” he said.

When students explore other holidays, it helps broaden young minds to the world around them, Mr. Fusco added.

Classes will cover other traditions from across the globe as we head into Winter Break.
